I try to link to Audio Lunchbox when possible for music sales. ALB offers MP3 and Ogg downloads with album art, which is cool. Otherwise links go to whereever they say.

antarctica

Comprised of Denver, Colorado's Eric Richter, ex-Christie Front Drive, and a handful of others, antarctica specialized in a (appoprietly) chilling and stark and yet soulful electronic-based sound. Lots of punchy, jangly guitar riffs (and very few chords), and equally as much simply synthesized keyboard sounds are a staple of the few songs the band created. A good choice if you're into 80's synthpop. Very close to New Order and early The Cure (and their most recent stuff but much less bombasitc). Some tracks on 81:03 are almost early Moby. Richter went on to The 101. Two of 'em (Chris Donohue and Glenn Maryansky) went on to form Ova Looven, which produces music that is very similar to Antarctica. (Link goes to record company website.) any information about the other members is appreciated.

antarctica released 2 albums: 23:03, a 3-song EP, and 81:03, a double-disc set. 81:03 is very interesting as far as albums go - disc 2 sounds very different than the first, almost to the point of switching genres, yet is pulled off equally as well as disc 1.

Sample antarctica: 21:03 - Closetful Of Churches (11MB) • 81:03 - 7759 60784 1 e (17MB) • 81:03 - the chrome selected (8.2MB)

dora

This was a local Memphis band. Straying from the local mix of metal, blues, and straight-up rock, they produced a guitar-driven ethereal mix that must be heard to be believed. They broke up in 2003, formed again in '03/'04 breifly as US Sunday, and finally "reincarnated" (with members of Fireworks Over London and Square State, two other popular Memphis bands) as This Is Goodbye, who are quite worthy successors to the sound dora created.

dora released an EP (which I don't have the name of) and a full-length record on madeline records by the name of "dead hourse lounge". Before they broke up, they released a full live cover of Pink Floyd's The Wall on their website in mp3 format.

Sample dora: Dead Horse Lounge - Fareveller (10MB) • Dead Horse Lounge - Piano 2 (9.7MB)

crash into june

CIJ is another Memphis band, this time in the laudable arena of power pop. Sparkling guitar work and squeaky clean lyrics and vocals with intelligent lyrics make CIJ a treat to listen to. CIJ broke up at the beginning of 2005, and their website can still be seen at crash into june dot com.

texas is the reason

Hailing from New York (not Texas), TitR was one of the fore-runners in the new wave of emo punk (now popularized by New Found Glory, Jimmy Eat World, and others). Their lyrics don't always make sense, but they sound good, so who cares? Texas Is The Reason is pretty straight-forward rock - it's a shame they didn't get more success than they did.

Texas Is The Reason released a self-titled EP and a full-length record named "Do You Know Who You Are?". They also have a split with The Promise Ring, who are still together.
