This Month - Elbow, dora, Modest Mouse.
Elbow is based out of the UK (Manchester specifically) with a sound that I would describe as Coldplay with intelligent and edgier lyrics. Asleep in the Back was their first, and spawned several singles (Red and Newborn, as well as Any Day Now and Coming Second). They have a guitar and keyboard driven sound combined with light, precise drumming and a lead singer that has a sensitive croon, but lyrics with a touch of edge. Cast of Thousands is their second and current record, and keeps the basics of the sound but seems quite a bit lighter. I personally prefer Asleep in the Back over Cast of Thousands.

Formerly a local Memphis band, dora had a very ethereal, introspective sound. Lots of glittery and jangly guitar bits and sullen keyboards. Some of the members of this band went on to start This Is Goodbye. dora had one album, Dead Horse Lounge, and an EP.

Modest Mouse is very depressing but has gotten a fair amount of fame lately from their hit single "Float On." However, the album that spawned it is chock full of other good tracks - Bukowski is one, and the sample here is another. Their sound on Good News For People Who Love Bad News is very much more refined from their earlier album, The Moon & Antarctica (also the rest of their earlier albums) but the core is the same.
