random bits

I just got done cleaning and slightly rearranging my desk at work. This is a painful process in which I manage to turn off all my desktops accidentially and then try to unbork USB on the Dell (which is now running SuSE).

I migrated my desktop from XP Pro to SuSE 10 - it’s working pretty good. I don’t know ultimately how useful Linux is, but it’s keeping me from having to be bothereed with stuff, which is nice. To an extent, at any rate. I still have Windows XP installed on it in a virtual machine. Still a few fiddly bits on there - like, to add users to Samba you still have to be at a command line to do it - but on the whole it’s working pretty nicely. Going to try UML.

Speaking of Linux, I love that OS X has X11. I can have my stupid VM running in VMware Player on my Dell but have the windows on my Mac. This capability isn’t new in the least but it amazes me every time I do it. On the flip side, the Ethernet chip in my PowerBook seems to make a whole lot of noise when it’s moving a lot of data like that.. every time I do a screen refresh in the VM it’s chirping away. Combination of that and the video chipset, I think - it doesn’t do it if I’m just moving data.

Finally, hooray for vacations and the prospect of having one soon.

new toys

due to the fact that I pretty much chewed through the cord on my old Sony headphones, I went through amazon and got a set of Sennheiser HD202 headphones (note: not an affiliate link). I’ve been listening to them with a variety of music - Counting Crows, Peter Gabriel, Björk, et. al. - and they’re bloody awesome for $20. Could stand to have a bit more midrange. I think though I’m gonna buy another pair for the house as they seriously seem to sound better than the Klipsch ProMedia GMX a-2.1s I have in my computer room. The ear elements didn’t seem like they’d fit my ears but they block out ambient noise really well. Looking forward to putting them to the test on Monday.

Hard to believe it’s almost the end of the year already. The whole lack of sunlight when leaving work is helping my sleep schedule, which is nice.
